Class Description:
The goals of the class are to familiarize the participants with elements of video production. I will show you how to operate DSLR cameras and sound equipment necessary to shoot low-budget film-making and other production work. Also I will be show participants how to file media and then edit the media.
Class Requirements:
Ideally, each participants will have a DSLR camera, a computer, and editing software (I recommend getting a subscription to Adobe Creative Suite CS6). If you don’t have to money to get these resources, participants can still participate and learn without, although having one or all three of these makes the class more digestible.\
Skills Being Taught:
DSLR camera work, video editing, pre-production through post-production, and other film-making techniques.
Teacher Bio:
Robert Rowan
I didn’t get into film I finished my undergraduate degree in English and Political Science (my original aspirations were to be a lawyer). After several years away from academia, I decided to get my graduate degree in film and video production at the University of Memphis. However, I soon realized that my aspirations and creativity was not in line with the program’s, so I decided to strike out on my own and write, direct, edit and act in my first narrative short entitled “Pastiche,” which took me on-and-off about a year to finish (completed in August of 2012). I am currently waiting to hear if it got into SXSW and am planning on sending it to other festivals. While I was finishing “Pastiche” piecemeal, I was sound operator on a low-budget film, worked freelance videography and photography gigs around town, edited on a low-budget film entitled “Being Awesom e,” and shot, directed, edited and narrated a 9-minute bicycle documentary entitled “Meditations on Two Wheels” which one the audience award at the 2nd Annual Bikesploitation Festival in Memphis and screened at Indie Memphis. Late last year, I traveled for a month with the North Mississippi Allstars where I acted as videographer and editor for their concert vignettes and ran live projection video and effects for their shows. Currently, I am teaching a class at Memphis University School on cinema production and edit the news at WPTY ABC 24. In my free time I am co-producing a low-budget feature entitled “Lights, Camera, Bullshit” – while also acting as DIT and editor – and am in the beginning phases of writing and producing sketches for a sketch comedy group I am trying to build entitled Terror Comedy.
